A family business, built on a solid foundation of over 40 years experience

About Us

Colin Rowan, founder of Rowan Stoneworks,  has 40 years experience in the trade. Colin’s apprenticeship was carried out with Historic Scotland, based at Dunstaffnage Castle, Dunbeg, and he studied at David Dale College in Glasgow.

On completion of his apprenticeship he moved to Edinburgh and worked at Canon Mills Bridge, Stewart MacGlashan Stonemasons as a banker mason for 4 years. Here he was involved in the cutting of stone for various projects including Fettes College, Royal Bank of Scotland, George Street, Edinburgh, The Burrell Collection, Stirling Castle, Culzean Castle, to name but a few.

In 1982, Colin became self employed and has been in constant demand ever since. He prides himself with happy clients and leaving a clean and tidy site.

Our work varies significantly from restoring the pictish Broch on the Island of Lismore, conserving the 14th century grave stones in Lismore, carving wall plates to new builds faced with stone. No two projects are the same. In the last ten years alone, we have carried out work on several estates close to home – Fasnacloich, Glencreran, Lochnell, Kingairloch, Glenkinglass Knock Estate and Ardkinglas Estate. The estate work could be new build or restoration to existing buildings or walls.

Other works include a memorial pillar, repairs to churches, replicating arch windows, creating garden features… the list is endless.

Rowan Stoneworks has steadily grown over the years and along with  Colin is  David Jackson, Michael Hogg and our newest member to the team is Dave McCabe. Colin, David and Michael are all time served masons. David Jackson completed his apprenticeship with Rowan Stoneworks and Michael completed his apprenticeship, like Colin, with Historic Scotland. Dave is our mature apprentice who attends college in 2 week blocks and fits nicely in to the team . A new labourer will be joining us later in April 2017 , with the addition of a new apprentice  in June when he has completed his highers.
